>>234100773 (OP) so you cannot trust anything that intel says about the state of their process technology. if anything, you can trust that its worse than they say.
in this post i will lay out a model to infer where Intel is on 7nm EUV. here are my assumptions (and mind you some can be way off):
as of last year there was some analysis from some really smart people that tried to figure out who owned how many ASML EUV machines on planet earth.
IIRC they figured there were about 60 ASML EUV machines (old model) in existence. and they were distributed roughly 30/20/10 TSMC/SS/INTC. these may be off (but is probably accurate to +/- 5) as im working from memory but clearly INTC was far behind.
now ASML makes about 12 EUV machines every quarter. they just started making their latest model in Q4 2019. their production was hamstrung at the beginning of the year due to covid but they are back on track now.
lets assume in order to produce all of the silicon it needs, INTC would need to produce about 200k wpm. how many EUV machines does this require?
well if TSMC is making about 40-50k 5nm wpm and they have 30 EUV machines, that would mean 200k wpm would require around 120 EUV machines.
to check my assumptions on this, the old ASML model (3400B) could process 120 wph. lets assume all 30 TSMC were this 3400B model. doing the math, 120wph 24h 80% operational hours 365days / 60 layers = 14,000 wpy per machine 30 machines = 420,000 wpy. so my assumptions roughly checks out but again could be totally wrong so someone with better knowledge please correct. with the new 3400C model the wpy would be increased by 1.5X.
so if INTC has 10 EUV machines (old model), they would need another ~20 (new model) to get to roughly 25% of their silicon needs and be where TSMC is at right now. each 3400C costs around $150M so 20 would cost intel $3B. clearly they would not want to commit to such a major purchase until they have proven out a working process using the existing machines they have.
so it would take ASML 3 quarters to deliver 20 EUV machines assuming 55% of their production goes to INTC (which is probably unrealistic) which is around 7 per quarter.
looking at ASML Q3 statements, the deliveries of all litho machines (not just EUV, they do not break that down) to NA went down dramatically. INTC is making EUV only in Arizona IIRC (someone correct me if this is wrong). you assume GF micron and txi are not ordering EUV, so any NA deliveries of EUV have to be INTC.
so clearly INTC is not getting many/any EUV machines from ASML of late. this is a worrisome sign if you are an INTC stockholder.
but lets be optimistic and say INTC has placed those orders for delivery Q4 2020, Q1 2021 and Q2 2021 (this is doubtful as discussed below). this would mean by june 2021 they would have ~30 EUV machines (10 old and 20 new) on premises. which collectively could produce ~500k wafers per year or ~25% of their silicon needs. (again, these are very rough estimates.)
now it takes 6 months to install these machines IIRC (assuming the floor space is prepared). so june 2021 + 6 months = dec 2021.
then there is risk production which is another 9 months. lets say INTC is really aggressive and only does risk production for 6 months and eats the cost of poor yields and low supply.
so dec 2021 + 6 months = jun 2022.
so best case, INTC will begin high volume production on 25% of their silicon needs on jun 2022 at the earliest and if there are no road bumps or revisions or steppings (which there almost always is). and thereafter, it would take another several years to get to full EUV production of 100% of their silicon needs.
so at this time, the very earliest i estimate INTC can produce 7nm EUV in volume is june 2022. AMD will be on TSMC 5nm EUV by Q1 2022. intel has also secured capacity for TSMC 5nm. (i am not sure how TSMC is comfortable giving INTC their PDK when INTC is supposedly still a potential competitor but somehow they worked it out.) so between the recent ASML deliveries, INTC buying 5nm wafers from TSMC and Bob's lack of clarity on the subject, i would say INTC 7nm EUV is not in good shape and it must be a pressure cooker right now and morale must be low. the fact that Bob did not say "we have placed the orders with ASML to get the EUV machines over the next 3 quarters" very likely means they have not placed the orders and thus the timeline is already a lot worse than what i have laid out.
so just read the ASML quarterly review and see how many lithos were delivered to NA. if you do not see at least 7-10 going to NA in the next several quarters, it means INTC is blowing smoke up their customers and investors arshes and they are no where near achieving the 2022 timeframe and if this continues, by mar/jun 2021 they will need to disclose to investors another revision of timeline to 2023.
and if my thesis is right that market share equals TSMC bleeding edge capacity, it means that for the foreseeable future AMD will be on equal footing with intel in terms of potential market share and that AMD will sell every chip it can make. customers who cannot get an allocation of TSMC wafers will need to settle for INTC 10/14nm or AMD 7nm, and with AMD 7nm > INTC 10/14nm, its not a bad state of affairs for AMD.
